Even though I just got a raise at work I tried to focus on saving this month. I’m trying to pay my car payment off as quickly as possible because being in debt makes me anxious. I just don’t like to owe anyone anything and who wants to pay interest? Not me!
I focused on saving but I did make a few purchases that are worth mentioning. So here are my July favorites from fashion to fitness and beauty:
This book completely surprised me because at first I couldn’t get into it. I felt like I was reading another book that would be similar to Big Little Lies. As the author started to describe Shaker Heights it reminded me too much of Pleasantville or The Stepford Wives. All three of these books and movies are great in their own way but when you’ve read it once, do you really need to go there again?
I stuck it out and realized this book was something different. By the third chapter I was immersed in this world she created and felt deeply connected to the characters. I’m not just talking about the main characters either. The secondary characters were able to hold their own with each storyline she introduced.
The book was eyeopening and made me think about topics that normally wouldn’t be on my radar like what does it mean to be a mother?
Ng introduces us to several families, mainly a single mother, Mia, raising her daughter, Pearl and the Richardson family. The Richardson family is large, well known and well off. From the surface we see they have never had any struggles or worried about money. Race? Also not an issue for them. They live in this bubble where everything is black and white until it’s not any more and that’s when we start to see cracks in the family.
The novel does pose questions about race, motherhood and what it means to be a mother. Should birth mothers who give up their child still be able to claim their child? Should they get a second chance? Does being a mother mean the bond you have with your child is there by blood? Or is it forged by love? Or friendship? Or pain?
I could honestly talk about this book all day. I highly recommend it. I’m a little annoyed that there isn’t a sequel because even though I can imagine it I would love to know what happens next in Ng’s head.
This past month my main focus has been my health. For the most part I haven’t missed any of my workout classes. I personally do not like the gym. I prefer spin, kickboxing, aerobics and even weightlifting classes because I just don’t have the motivation to push myself on my own.
I’m currently down six pounds, which doesn’t look like a huge difference but my clothes are a little looser and I think it’s mainly thanks to kickboxing. I have also fallen in love with CKO Kickboxing again. If my body could handle it I would go every day but I’m definitely not there yet.
Obviously with kickboxing you’re punching a heavy bag repeatedly so the quality of your gloves is really important. I don’t love the regular gloves but I am a fan of fingerless gloves. Mainly because we do a lot of push-ups, burpees and other floor work. It hurts my wrists to do everything on my knuckles and then taking the glove off for every exercise is inconvenient.
So I love the gloves from Harbinger that are specifically made for women. They’re light but they will still protect your hands. I purchased a small, which fit my hand perfectly so I don’t have room for wraps underneath. I definitely don’t need them. I don’t ever leave with cuts or bruises on my knuckles, which can’t be said for a different pair of gloves I tried. If you’re interested in trying out kickboxing or looking for some new gloves I would check these out. A good majority of women in my classes do own these gloves so I know they hold up well, which is great because they are pricey.
I am obsessed with the color yellow so finding this bikini from Target was like winning the jackpot! The bottoms are like regular bikini briefs, so full coverage, nothing is hanging out or jiggling around. The bottoms are definitely breathable but it’s a great thick material so it stays in place. The top is what makes this bikini. It gives you a little lift, which I do not need but I’ll take it! I just love that it fits like a bra. You can pick out your regular band/cup size so you know this will fit your chest without any issue. While it does have the halter tie top, it also has two secure bands with a hook closure so you won’t ever have to worry about your top coming undone or your ladies popping out.
10/10 would recommend.
Continuing with the yellow theme, PINK just released some stuff for fall that’s entirely yellow. I am in love! When I first got the e-mail about the new release I freaked out. Yellow is fun and a flattering color. I think it compliments most people, especially us tan girls, so I love the color. It also automatically makes me think of sunshine and happiness.
I already own too many yoga pants from PINK but what’s one more? I know they’re rather expensive but I never buy them full price. Make sure you sign up for their mailing list and they will send you coupons every month. They usually send $10 off of a $40 purchase. Spending thirty dollars for a high quality legging that I’m going to use every week sounds better than forty, right? I swear I’m not a shopaholic.
Check out the entire yellow line here!
Around Christmas I purchased the Peter Thomas Roth Mask-a-Holic kit. I personally love the pumpkin enzyme mask and the 24K Gold Mask. Since a little goes a long way and these are full jars, not small sample sizes, I haven’t been able to try everything from my set.
I finally tested out the Hydra-Gel Eye Patches and they are amazing. First off, it’s so cool they’re gold. I never knew I was so bougie and cared about those things but I do and I’m impressed.
I finally tried the eye patches because I’ve had an issue with my under eyes lately. My allergies have been bothering me. I have been having trouble breathing so that means I’m also having trouble sleeping. Hello, dark under eye circles, we meet again!
According to Sephora.com, these 24K gold eye patches help with firming, lifting and brightening the under-eye area. After ten minutes of using these I noticed the puffiness under my eyes had gone down and while my under eye circles weren’t completely gone, they did look better. This obviously isn’t going to do miracles but I think they can help brighten your face after a hard night or long night out.
When I went to North Carolina in June my hair was completely destroyed. It was so hot over there every ounce of moisture was sucked out of my hair and it felt and looked like a broom. Conditioner itself wasn’t doing the job so once I got back home my hair needed some major TLC.
The It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Mask saved my hair. I already use the spray as my heat protectant but if one product works in a line that doesn’t necessarily mean every product is good. Am I right?
This little hair mask has been collecting dust in my beauty cabinet. I honestly forgot all about it but I knew I needed something a little bit more than coconut oil to refresh my hair. This got the job done!
It doesn’t have a weird smell, which is great because I leave this on as an overnight mask. You can use it for ten minutes after shampooing like it says on the jar but I leave it in longer because I workout so much I opt out of shampoo most days of the week and instead use this as a regular conditioner. My hair has been more manageable after using this. I also noticed less fall out. It has also sealed my ends so they haven’t been breaking off, which was a huge issue I was having because of the heat. My hair is soft, shiny and looks healthy again after using this once a week for the past month.
If you want your nail polish to last longer you need to purchase this rubberized basecoat. It’s completely life changing! I refuse to go to the nail salon because they put water in their nail polishes (true story!). That’s why it chips so quickly if you get a regular manicure. I won’t do gel because it’s expensive and bad for your nails so I just give myself a manicure at home.
I don’t use expensive nail polish. I’m not sure it certain brands last longer than others but the one I buy still chips after a few days until I started using a rubberized basecoat. This adheres to the nail polish better so your manicure lasts longer. I can go a little over a week without any major chips. It doesn’t leave your nails glossy so you’ll still want to use a topcoat, which the brand does have (I just haven’t used it before), to seal everything in to give it a polished look.
For years I have struggled with blackheads. Nose strips have never done anything for me. Some masks have been helpful but they haven’t completely removed those deep blackheads that just don’t seem to budge.
This suction device was one of those late night purchases you make when you can’t fall asleep. I’m so glad this actually works! I was very surprised because normally my impulse buys are an epic fail.
If you struggle with blackhead removal and can’t afford to get an extraction like me I recommend purchasing this. However, please make sure you read the directions and look online for how-to videos. Don’t be an idiot like me. I figured, what’s the worse that can happen? And used the device without reading the instructions. It gave my nose what looked like a hickey that concealer almost didn’t cover up. My marks went away after two days but it was not a good look! Once I read the instructions like a normal person and looked at some YouTube videos I figured out how to use this guy and it worked! It removed my whiteheads without any issue and most of my blackheads. It takes repeated use to really get all the gunk out. Every Sunday I suck all the bad stuff out my face. It’s disgusting and hurts a little bit but I LOVE it!
Potterheads make sure you check out Target because they just released a new line for the series! I had to stop myself from buying everything since I’m trying to save money but Christmas is practically around the corner, right? No? Well…that doesn’t mean I can’t start Christmas shopping! Ha-ha!
I had to buy these bodysuits for my baby cousin because you have to start them early if you want them to be a fan! We’re huge Potter fanatics in my family so these will be appreciated by his parents.
